No, it's probably not what you're thinking. And trust me. It's much better.
Let me give you an example of what Sci-Fi channel wishes to accomplish and set forth among us in 2010. For this exercise, we'll pretend Star Wars is a television show.
Tuesday night, you're sitting on the couch eatin' some Doritos while Han Solo gets captured by a bunch of Storm Troopers. Bear with me since I'm not the typical Star Wars geek. Meaning, I might get some details screwed up. That's not the point though...
So, Han gets captured! The cliff hanger is Han held captive while an impending battle to save him begins. Only, it's the audience that holds the outcome of the battle and Han's life.
At the end of the show, viewers are told that the battle will take place on Thursday at 9pm Eastern. You, the viewer, logs on to the MMO (if you own it) with your friends and fights the battle.
Maybe you want to fight on the Storm Troopers side. Maybe you want to help save Han. That's up to you which side you choose. Whatever the outcome is in the MMO, the television show's story reflects that experience.
Purely awesome and highly interactive.
Hopefully this is handled correctly and the production value is high. If so, I would be bold enough to say that Fox, ABC, CBS, etc would follow suit.
Imagine something like 24 or Lost having something akin to this.
